A Rope
written 1998

Climbing into infinity is a rope
Whose never-ending fibers intermix
And braid around each other
In the cold wind rushing insanely by
And wrap up in themselves
To guard from the freezing air
But each knows its particular fate
Lies the same as all his siblings
And creeps slowly upward
Chasing them into infinity
As they flee in trails of vapor
And cease to exist down below
When their predator finally engulfs them
With its purifying fingers
Of white-hot incandescence
Which grip the rope with heat
And burn it away in anger
While the fibers scream without noise
In anguish and eternal despair
As their own fragile parts
And the parts of their counterparts
Are lost in the devastation down below
Which has been following them
Since the beginning of time
And will continue its pursuit
Into infinity.
